The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying differences between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to academies to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years. Academies also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and children of service personnel. The funding allocation is lagged by one year.

The Education Funding Agency has set the following Pupil Premium rates for the 2023 – 2024 academic year. In all cases these funding arrangements are slightly increased from 2022-2023:

• Pupils in Years 7 to 11 recorded as Ever 6 FSM £1035

• Pupils recorded as ‘Service Child’ £335

The Education Funding Agency has set the following Pupil Premium Plus rates for the 2023 – 2024 academic year:

• Looked-after children £2530

• Children who have ceased to be looked after by a local authority £2530

The Pupil Premium Plus funding for Looked-after children is held by the Local Authorities Virtual School Head teacher.

For the academic year 2020-21 the government withdrew the Year 7 literacy and numeracy 'Catch-up' premium. Academies instead received a proportion of the government’s £1 Billion COVID19 Catch-up premium as part of its response to the COVID19 pandemic. This fund equated to £80 per pupil on roll (Key stages 3 and 4) and was provided to academies in three stages across the academic year 2020-21. The COVID19 'Catch-up' premium was for the academic year 2020-21 only. For the academic years 2021-22 and 2022-23 the Academy was in receipt of the 'Recovery Premium'.

Grant Allocation 2022-23

For the 2023-2024 academic year The King’s CE Academy will receive the following base allocation Pupil Premium and Recovery premium funding:

Pupil Premium & Pupil Premium Plus Allocation: £210,105

Year 7 Catch-up Premium: withdrawn 2020-21

Recovery premium: £53,268

This gives us a total Income of: £263,373

Note: The academy has chosen to use the Recovery premium towards the cost of a HLTA: maths appointment as part of a longer term strategy to impact on student outcomes. The academy is targeting the work of the HLTA towards addressing gaps in students' maths skills and knowledg in Key Stage 3.
