What is the Early Career Framework?

The Early Career Framework (ECF) supports early career teachers, providing a structured 2-year package of high-quality professional development. The reforms are part of the government’s teacher recruitment and retention strategy, which aims to improve the training and development opportunities available to teachers.

The early career framework underpins this new entitlement for early career teachers’ professional development. It sets out what all early career teachers should learn about and learn how to do during the first 2 years of their careers.

It includes sections on:

What is changing from September 2021?

At The King’s Academy, the Induction Tutor is Thomas Harrison. Currently, The King’s Academy works with Painsley and St Joseph’s as the Appropriate Body for ECTs and mentors.

In accordance with DfE and ECF guidelines, ECTs have a reduced timetable of 10% during their first year and 5% in their second year, alongside a dedicated ECT mentor. ECTs have a weekly meeting with their mentor, focussing on pertinent issues related to ongoing ECF CPD, a school priority and topics important to the ECT’s practice at that time. At The King’s Academy, we work collaboratively with our Appropriate Body on the design and delivery of a supportive ECT and ECF programme.

ECTs have one observation per half term with their mentor and / or Induction Tutor. Progress reports are completed by the Induction Tutor at least twice during the two years against the eight DfE teaching standards, and submitted to the Appropriate Body.

ECTs also follow in-school CPD led by the Head of Teaching Learning at The King’s Academy, alongside other teaching experts. ECTs also follow available CPD provided by the Appropriate Body.
